Gaskets are essential components of a vehicle's engine to ensure optimal function. Gaskets are designed to form a tight seal between two automotive parts to prevent leakage of fluid or gases. But, gaskets are subject to wear and tear due to extreme heat and pressure. Thus, the materials used become brittle and deteriorate, which effects engine function.

The material used to create a gasket depends on what part of the engine a seal is required. The device might be composed of cork, rubber or metal. Head gaskets may be manufactured from layers of coated steel, copper or a combination of materials. The gaskets used in a vehicle's thermostat, valve cover or water pump might consist of cork or composite materials.

Gasket failure might be indicated by fluid leakage on the engine, engine parts or beneath the vehicle. The vehicle might also suffer overheating. Any abnormal malfunction, emission or odor requires evaluation by a professional automotive technician to prevent costly damage.
